The Blue Flag is a prestigious recognition which is awarded to beaches and marinas that follow strict criteria regarding water quality, environmental management, safety, site facilities and environmental education
Seven leisure and tourism properties will benefit from the Blue Flag today, including Saadiyat Public Beach, Monte-Carlo Beach Club, Saadiyat, St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort & Spa, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi developed by ADNH, Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara, Al Yamm Villa Resort on Sir Bani Yas Island and Al Bateen Wharf.
"We are so proud to announce that we will be raising the Blue Flag across our properties. It is an international recognition that goes on to show the efforts we've been making to maintain our beaches and marinas up to the highest standards. It is also an international accreditation that we believe will make our properties even more appealing especially since it is a label that is recognized by the environmentally conscious tourists and visitors around the world," said Dr. Nathalie Staelens, Head of Environmental Services at TDIC.
TDIC will be working closely with its operators to make sure that the beaches continue to be managed and maintained up to the best standards such as maintaining water quality, publishing the water quality results on a board that can be seen by visitors, providing a number of recycling bins on site and arranging for educational activities. The Blue Flag requires its grantees to arrange for at least five activities on environmental education throughout the year. "It is a responsibility which we will share with our operators who play an instrumental part in taking care of the beaches and preserving its natural resources," Staelens added.
Saadiyat Beach is today one of the most-sought-after international tourist destinations, with its world-class leisure attractions, surrounding natural beauty and sensitivity to the prevalent ecosystems. Earlier this year, TDIC opened the first public beach on the island, the Saadiyat Public Beach, managed by the specialized operator BAKE, which has attracted over 50,000 visitors to date. Similarly, Sir Bani Yas, a nature-based tourism destination and one of the largest natural islands in the United Arab Emirates, has become today an attractive holiday retreat for residents and visitors, who are looking to explore nature and wildlife in a spectacular and relaxing setting.
